Alpen is the town where all characters start out in. You can think of it as the 'beginner town' for that reason, although plenty of higher level characters come back here to visit NPCs not available in other towns, such as Ashley the Exchange Market NPC. Alpen is the only town that you can find things such as a hair salon, and many other NPCs. Alpen is also where you get your first class change, from beginner to warrior, archer, or mage.

The town of Alpen is located in the southwest quadrant of Alpen Field. You can't miss it: not only do all new characters start here, it is also the first location on the map location selector on the top-righthand corner of the map screen, which you bring up by pressing its default hotkey, M.
